Australia builds border protection capacity in Timor-Leste

18 June 2014

Australian expert forensic document examiners last week provided specialist training to Timorese migration, police, customs, and civil registration officials.

From 9-16 June 2014, 36 Timorese participants successfully completed a course in forensic document examination conducted in Dili by Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). The training expands on additional DIBP funded border assessment training, which was provided in May 2014.

Siaan Ansori, First Secretary (Immigration) at the Australian Embassy in Dili, said the training shows Australia’s long term commitment in building border security in the region.

“Specialist border management skills are essential for detecting and deterring people smuggling, trafficking in persons and related transnational crime. Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated and countries in the region need to work together to stay one step ahead,” said Dr Ansori.

The Australian DIBP has been providing assistance to the Migration Service of Timor-Leste since 2005. Assistance has included specialist border training, English language training, provision of border systems equipment, training and maintenance, and legislative and organisational planning support.
