National Women’s Day: Celebrating the Contribution of Timor-Leste Women: Past, Present and Future

The Australian Embassy today hosted a seminar at the National University of Timor Lorosae (UNTL) to mark National Women’s Day and highlight the contribution women have made and are making to Timor-Leste.
The event attracted three high level speakers who outlined their views on the achievements, challenges and opportunities facing Timorese women.
Speakers included:
- Olandina Caeiro; female leader during the resistance period, member of NGO Fokupers, former diplomat and successful entrepeneur;
- Merita Correia; Director of ALFeLA (an NGO providing legal aid to women and children); and
- Zevonia Vieira; journalist and young activist, currently working at peace building group Search for Common Ground.
The event also included a Civil Society Organisation Fair with representation from local and international NGOs in Timor-Leste, including Marie Stopes International, Oxfam, Ba Futuru, and Casa Vida.
The event was organised by the Australian Embassy as part of Australia’s overall commitment to assisting the Timor-Leste government and people achieve their goals of empowering women and promoting greater gender equality.
