17 September 2014

The Policia Nacional de Timor-Leste (PNTL) today received thirteen vehicles, ten cars and three motorcycles, from Australia.

Australian Federal Police Commander of the Australian Government supported Timor-Leste Police Development Program (TLPDP), Graham Waite, officially handed the keys to PNTL Commander General Longuinhos Monteiro at a ceremony at the PNTL Headquarters in Comoro. The TLPDP is a capacity development program managed by the Australian Federal Police and has operated in Timor-Leste since 2004.

The vehicles will be distributed to a Commissioner’s Vehicle Pool and will be used for driver training of PNTL officers, Dili District Police Patrols and maintenance of the Police Training Centre.

Commander Waite said the vehicles were part of the ongoing support to PNTL provided by TLPDP. The vehicles would assist PNTL to manage training and administrative functions and in particularly would be used to support PNTL in professionally responding to and investigating crime in Dili.

“Australia stands by Timor-Leste as it continues the professional development of the PNTL to provide a secure and stable environment for its citizens,” said Commander Waite.

“These vehicles deonstrate this commitment and we are proud to provide ongoing support to the PNTL as it continues to build on its significant achievements as a professional policing organisation.”
